Hello, I’m Kathy, the hands behind Swan River Creations. Every piece you see here is made by me, one at a time, in my North Idaho studio.

Rooted in the Rockies

I grew up in Northwest Montana, surrounded by mountains, forests, lakes and wildlife. Today I make pottery in North Idaho, but those Montana roots—and the landscape of the Northwest—still find their way into nearly everything I create.

Trees, mountains, wildlife, wildflowers and even a few chickens have all become part of my work. They reflect the places and simple things I love.

From Clay to Creation

Every mug, bowl and piece of pottery begins with clay and is made by hand. Much of my work is wheel-thrown, then carved, painted, decorated or glazed before making its way through the kiln.

I love experimenting with clay, glaze and surface design, but I also want my pottery to be useful. These are pieces meant for morning coffee, soup at the kitchen table, flowers from the garden and all the ordinary moments in between.

Made One at a Time

Handmade pottery has a personality of its own. Glazes move, colors change in the kiln, brushwork varies and no two pieces come out exactly alike.

That little bit of unpredictability is part of what I love about pottery. The piece you choose really is yours—made by hand rather than by a machine, with its own small variations and character.

Why I Create

I believe the things we use every day can be both beautiful and useful. A favorite handmade mug can become part of a morning ritual, a bowl can find its permanent place at the family table, and something made by another person’s hands can carry a little story with it.

My hope is simple: that you use my pottery, enjoy it, and let it become part of your everyday life.
